I'm not very happy with the original footage because it was grainy and caused some troubles around the edges. But still I think it looks nice and I had great time making it.
Here's a quick VFX breakdown and a look at the virtual set.
We had a big problem when we came to the set - the table was bigger than the towel we brought. The only solution was to make 2 recordings of the wide shots in order to cover both sides of the table. The actors had to repeat those shots twice. Later in After Effects I used the liquify tool to disguise and align the table cloth.
And now you are probably asking "How did shot the asparagus on chroma key?" My solution in this case was to replace asparagus with something similar, we used red candy. Later, on after effects, I masked the candy and changed the hue to green. I just wish I could have darkened a bit, because the color is too vivid in the final picture.
The last step on the editing was to add a nice soft grain. It always makes the image feel a bit more natural, but sadly ruins the compression on Youtube. The original movie was shot on film, so I tried to invoke the same picture style on my project.
I had some issues with the mother's audio, so on the last minute before finishing, I asked my colleague to record again some lines. It's clear when that happens, because this time I recorded her inside an audio recording studio. Next time I would record all of the voices again in a recording studio.
So, here's my special thanks to this great crew:
